Pronunciation:
[mod-uh-kril-ik]
Origin:
1955-60
Definition:
A manufactured fiber in which the fiber-forming substance is any long chain synthetic polymer composed of less than 85% but at least 35% by weight of acrylonitrile units. Both wet and dry spinning are used. Although modacrylics are similar to acrylics in properties and application, certain important differences exist. Modacrylics have superior resistance to chemicals and combustion, but they are more heat sensitive and have a higher specific gravity (less cover). The principal applications of modacrylic fibers are in pile fabrics, flame-retardant garments, draperies, and carpets
