Nylon

Origin:
1935; coined as a generic by the DuPont Chemical Co. as distinct from known words and having no prior meaning or use.

 

Definition:
Nylon is a thermoplastic silky material, first used commercially in a nylon- bristled toothbrush (1938), followed more famously by women's stockings. Nylon is one of the most commonly used polymers.
