The Mint Museum of Art and the Mint Museum of Craft & Design in uptown Charlotte, NC will move into their newly constructed building in September 2010. With the celebration of this event, it was decided to commission ten of the top craftsmen in their field. It was a worldwide search. The name 10/10/10 came from ten artists with ten commissions opening in 2010. Hildur Bjarnadóttir is the number one fiber artist to be chosen to represent the field of fiber in Project Ten Ten Ten by Annie Carlano, Director of the Mint Museum of Craft + Design.
Hildur Bjarnadóttir’s contemporary fiber art is a reaction to the commonplace negative comparison of textiles to “fine art.” Celebrating traditional weaving and off loom techniques (tatting, crochet, knitting, needle and bobbin lace) she is reintroducing the art world to the exquisite details and patterns inherent in textiles, while at the same time demonstrating their relevancy in today’s art world. Visually potent and with strong social messages, Bjarnadóttir’s creations are included in major museums in Scandinavia and Iceland, and in the Portland Museum of Contemporary Craft, Museum of Arts and Design, New York, and in private collections on both sides of the pond.
The work she will create as a part of the Project Ten Ten Ten series is her first museum commission. She will be in residence in Charlotte from March 24th through the 31st.
